Frederiksted Pier vs. Cane Bay: Where to Snorkel and Dive in St. Croix
Frederiksted Pier vs. Cane Bay: Where to Snorkel and Dive in St. Croix
If you are planning a trip to St. Croix, chances are high that world-class snorkeling or scuba diving is at the top of your vacation itinerary. Our beautiful island is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs, crystal-clear Caribbean waters, and a diverse array of marine life.
However, two of the absolute best underwater spots on the island offer completely different experiences: The Frederiksted Pier on the West End and Cane Bay on the North Shore.
Whether you are a casual snorkeler looking for sea turtles or an avid scuba diver hunting for macro life, here is how these two iconic St. Croix dive sites stack up—and how to make the most of your underwater adventures.
Frederiksted Pier
🧜♂️ The Frederiksted Pier: A West End Macro Paradise
Located just minutes down the road from Cruzan Beach House, the Frederiksted Pier is universally famous among divers and snorkelers alike. Because it is protected from heavy ocean swells on the calm west side of the island, the water here is typically as flat and clear as a swimming pool.
What You’ll See: The concrete and steel pillars of the pier have transformed over the years into a vertical coral reef. As you swim between the columns, you will find columns encrusted with colorful sponges, sea fans, and brain coral. Keep an eyes out for seahorses, frogfish, octopus, and schools of blue tangs.
The Snorkeling Experience: It’s an incredibly easy entry right from the beach or the steps. Because the water is relatively shallow near the shore and deepens gradually, it is perfect for all skill levels.
Local Insider Tip: If you want a truly unforgettable experience, book a guided night dive or night snorkel at the pier. When the sun goes down, the pier completely transforms as octopuses come out to hunt, orange cup corals open up, and bioluminescence lights up the water.
Cane Bay
🐠 Cane Bay Beach: The Famous North Shore "Wall"
If you head up to the scenic North Shore of St. Croix, you’ll find Cane Bay. This spot is legendary because it offers some of the best shore-diving in the entire Caribbean due to a dramatic underwater drop-off known simply as "The Wall."
What You’ll See: Just a short swim from the sandy beach, the ocean floor suddenly drops from about 40 feet deep down into a vertical abyss of over 3,000 feet. Along the edge of this massive drop-off, you are likely to spot larger marine life, including reef sharks, eagle rays, green sea turtles, and massive deep-water corals.
The Snorkeling Experience: While scuba divers flock here to descend down the Wall, snorkelers can enjoy the lush patch reefs closer to the shore. The swim out to the actual drop-off is a bit longer and can occasionally have more currents than the calm West End, so fins are highly recommended.
Local Insider Tip: After you finish swimming, Cane Bay has a great stretch of beachside bars and restaurants where you can grab a cold drink and a bite to eat right on the water.
🏆 The Verdict: Which One Should You Visit?
You don't have to choose just one—you should absolutely visit both during your St. Croix vacation!
If you want calm, current-free water, easy access, and a chance to spot unique macro life like seahorses, stick close to home at the Frederiksted Pier. If you want a dramatic underwater drop-off, expansive reef systems, and a classic lively beach-bar atmosphere, take the beautiful island drive up to Cane Bay.
